We receive numerous inquiries from students eager to pursue a career in yachting. To help guide you, we’ve compiled an article outlining everything you need to know about a yachting career, including the pros and cons, as well as valuable RYA courses to launch a career as a yacht crew member
The yachting industry is a dynamic and rapidly growing sector, offering exciting career opportunities for those interested in becoming crew members. With an increasing number of luxury yachts and charter vessels entering the market, demand for skilled crew is at an all-time high.
A career as a yacht crew member comes with enticing perks, such as the chance to travel to exotic destinations, competitive salaries, and a flexible lifestyle. However, it’s not without its challenges.
The job often requires long periods away from home, intense physical labor, and adapting to the high expectations of yacht owners and guests. Despite these demands, the unique experiences, career growth potential, and opportunities in a thriving sector make yachting an appealing path for adventurous individuals.
Q: What are the perks of working as a yacht crew member?
A: 1. Competitive Salary and Benefits
Yacht crew members often enjoy a competitive salary, especially when working on luxury yachts or charter vessels. In addition to a good paycheck, many yacht positions come with perks such as free accommodation, meals, and even medical insurance.
Moreover, permanent yacht crew members typically receive a steady paycheck even during the off-season, providing financial stability throughout the year.
2. Travel to Exotic Destinations
One of the biggest perks of working as a yacht crew member is the opportunity to visit stunning, remote, and luxurious locations around the world. From the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, you’ll experience destinations that many people can only dream of.
3. Tax-Free Income
Depending on your country of residence, working on a yacht can sometimes offer tax advantages. Many seafarers qualify for tax exemptions if they spend a certain amount of time working outside their home country, leading to more take-home pay.
4. Flexible Lifestyle
Yacht jobs are often seasonal, meaning you can work hard for several months and take time off during the off-season. This flexibility allows for a good work-life balance, with plenty of time to travel, pursue hobbies, or relax between contracts.
5. Career Progression
Starting as a junior crew member opens the door to various career advancement opportunities. With experience and additional qualifications, you can work your way up to more senior positions such as chief officer, engineer, or even captain.
Q: What about the disadvantages?
A: 1. Extended Periods Away from Home:
Working on a yacht often involves long periods away from family and friends. Crew members may spend weeks or even months at sea, which can be challenging for maintaining personal relationships and managing personal affairs.
2. Physically Demanding Work:
The job can be physically strenuous, requiring crew members to handle heavy equipment, work in various weather conditions, and perform tasks that involve significant manual labor.
3. Irregular Hours:
Yachting can involve irregular and demanding hours, including early mornings, late nights, and on-call duties. This can affect work-life balance and personal time.
4. High Expectations and Stress:
Yacht crew members are often expected to maintain high standards of service and performance, which can be stressful, especially on luxury yachts where guest expectations are very high.
5. Limited Personal Space:
Living and working in close quarters with other crew members can be challenging. Space on a yacht is limited, and privacy can be minimal.
Q: What are the career opportunities available for a yacht crew member?
A: If you have no prior experience in yachting and are interested in entering the field, you'll begin with entry-level positions. These roles will provide you with the chance to familiarize yourself with the industry and gain firsthand experience.
Here are the main entry-level jobs for yacht crew members:
1. Deckhand:
Responsibilities: Assists with maintaining the yacht’s exterior, handling lines, anchoring, docking, and general deck operations. This role involves physical work and learning the basics of yacht management.
Skills Needed: Basic seamanship, physical fitness, and a willingness to learn.
2. Steward/Stewardess:
Responsibilities: Provides guest services including housekeeping, meal service, and ensuring a high standard of comfort and cleanliness in the yacht’s interior. This role focuses on hospitality and customer service.
Skills Needed: Strong communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and a friendly demeanor.
Q: How to I land a job as a yacht crew member?
A: 1. Complete Basic Training:
Enroll in entry-level courses such as the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) Basic Safety Training, which is mandatory for all crew members and covers essential safety and survival skills.
2. Obtain relevant RYA Certifications:
RYA courses primarily emphasize boat handling and skipper training for sailing vessels, tenders, and larger motor cruisers.
You might wonder, "Why would I need these skills if I'm working as a deckhand or hostess and not responsible for driving the yacht?"
Having fundamental boat handling skills is incredibly valuable. Not only do they provide you with a deeper understanding of the vessel you work on, but they also allow the captain to count on you for minor duties.
For example, a deckhand who knows how to operate powerboats can manage the yacht's tenders, handling transfers of charter guests between the shore and the mothership, and vice versa.
Additionally, gradually building these skills can position you for advancement to higher roles in the yachting industry.
You can find a detailed guide on our RYA Training for professionals below.
3. Create a Professional CV:
Highlight any maritime experience, relevant certifications, and transferable skills. If you’re just starting out, emphasize your willingness to learn and adaptability.
4. Network in the Yachting Industry:
Attend boat shows, network with industry professionals, and join yachting forums or social media groups to make connections and discover job openings.
Q: What RYA courses are useful for a career as a yacht crew member?
A: As previously mentioned, RYA qualifications are globally recognized in the yachting industry as a standard of high-quality training and competence, making them valuable additions to any job applicant's CV.
Depending on the type of yacht you plan to work on, here’s a list of highly sought-after RYA qualifications:
RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling Course:
The 2-day RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course is an essential qualification for yacht crew members, particularly those working on vessels with tenders.
It provides practical training in handling powerboats, covering essential skills such as launching, mooring, anchoring, and high-speed maneuvering.

This course is particularly valuable for those responsible for operating a yacht tender at any time, ensuring safe and efficient transfers of passengers.
Our program provides ample practice opportunities, allowing you to work with a crew member and handle operations short-handed. You'll become adept at pilotage for short passages from ship to shore, mastering both daytime and nighttime scenarios.

Each level builds upon the previous one, providing a clear path from basic to Yachtmaster (see below).
