Catamaran Training in the Greek Islands

A 7-day live-aboard programme designed for sailors who know how to sail — but haven’t yet spent serious time on a catamaran.

You’ll depart from Alimos Marina on Saturday morning and spend a full week navigating the Saronic Gulf and Cyclades aboard one of our modern catamarans — with RYA Yachtmaster-qualified instructors on deck the whole time. No day trips. You sleep, eat, and sail on the boat.

Who is this for

You can sail. Now learn to sail a cat.

Most sailors who want to charter in the Med will end up on a catamaran — yet almost no sailing school teaches on one. This programme exists to close that gap.
 
A week of real passages with an experienced instructor beside you is worth more than any shore-based course. You’ll handle the boat in different conditions, make decisions, and build the kind of confidence that only comes from time on the water.
 
Prerequisites: Some sailing experience is required — ideally up to Day Skipper level or equivalent. This isn’t an intro to sailing; it’s an intro to catamarans specifically.

The route

Saronic Gulf & Cyclades

The programme runs in collaboration with Blue Sails through some of the most well-protected and scenically varied sailing waters in Greece. Passages are long enough to be meaningful, short enough to leave time ashore each evening.
 
You won’t be on a day boat returning to the same marina every night. Each leg is a genuine passage, which means you’re constantly practising: departure planning, sail trim underway, anchoring or berthing in unfamiliar harbours.

Manoeuvring under power

Twin engines give a catamaran extraordinary manoeuverability — but only if you know how to use them. Berthing, stern-to mooring, and leaving tight spots are covered in real marinas, not a simulator.

Sail trim on a wide platform

Catamarans don’t heel — which changes everything about how you read the sails. You’ll learn to get the most from the boat upwind and downwind, including the differences in tacking and gybing a cat versus a monohull.

Anchoring a wide-beam vessel

A 14-metre beam changes how you approach an anchorage. You’ll practise scope, swinging room, and holding ground — including in busier Cyclades anchorages where space is limited.

Reading the Aegean weather

The meltemi is a fact of life in the Cyclades. You’ll plan passages around it, learn when to go and when to wait, and understand how the local wind patterns differ from Atlantic or Channel sailing.

Want to leave with an RYA qualification?

If you want formal certification alongside the practical experience, we can incorporate an official RYA course into the programme — tailored to your current level. All RYA practical sailing levels are available on our catamarans. Just let us know when you enquire.

  • RYA Day Skipper — The benchmark qualification for skippering a charter yacht in familiar waters.
  • RYA Coastal Skipper — Extends to coastal passages and night sailing. Requires existing Day Skipper or equivalent.

How it works

Duration

One week or two weeks

Departs Saturday morning from Alimos Marina, Athens. Returns the following Friday. Two-week option available for those who want more time on the water.

Kept intentionally small. More helm time, more direct feedback from your instructor, better learning for everyone on board.

Instructors

RYA Yachtmaster qualified

All our instructors hold RYA Cruising Instructor and Yachtmaster qualifications, with hands-on experience in Greek waters specifically.
