The RYA Tender Operator Course is designed for individuals who already hold basic powerboat skills and wish to develop the specialist techniques required for operating tenders safely, professionally, and confidently. This course is particularly suited to those working, or aspiring to work, in the superyacht industry, where high standards of boat handling and guest care are essential.
Throughout the course, participants will develop and practise the following key areas:
Professional preparation of the tender, including safety checks and equipment management
Tender terminology, systems, and operational awareness
Precise low-speed manoeuvring and close-quarters handling alongside yachts, docks, and beaches
Smooth and controlled high-speed handling, trim management, and passenger comfort
Coming alongside superyachts and docks, secure mooring, anchoring, and beach landings
Ropework and knots relevant to tender operations
Practical navigation, situational awareness, and short coastal passages
Application of Collision Regulations (COLREGs) in busy anchorages and traffic areas
Passenger transfers, client safety, and man-overboard recovery procedures
Professional standards, communication, and operational best practice for tender drivers
