What You Learn
Advanced boat handling, navigation and passage planning, night pilotage, and handling at planing speed in rougher waters. Students also learn about position fixing using traditional and electronic methods, collision regulations, and the practical application of tidal and weather considerations

For professionals wishing for commercial endorsement of this certificate, an RYA/MCA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence will be required. This is issued upon successful completion of an exam by an independent RYA /MCA examiner, which is not included in the standard package of the course.

· Under 10 metres in length

What will I learn?
The RYA Advanced Powerboat Course is designed for experienced powerboat skippers who already have a solid foundation in boat handling and navigation and wish to operate confidently in more demanding conditions. This course develops advanced practical and decision-making skills, preparing you for coastal passages by day and night, including offshore and rough-water operation.
Throughout the course, you will practise and refine the following areas:
Advanced preparation of the vessel, safety equipment, and passage planning for coastal operations
High-speed boat handling in rougher seas, including trim, balance, and power management
Close-quarters manoeuvring and boat control in exposed and tidal conditions
Night navigation and pilotage, including use of lights, lookout, and situational awareness
Advanced navigation, chartwork, and short coastal passage execution
Effective use and limitations of electronic navigation aids (GPS, chartplotter, radar where fitted)
Collision Regulations (COLREGs) applied to real-world scenarios, by day and night
Man-overboard recovery and towing techniques in more challenging conditions
Crew management, communication, and skipper decision-making under pressure
Engine awareness, fault recognition, and considerations for offshore operation
Who will I be sharing the boat with?
The cap for participants on any RYA Powerboat Course is set at 3, ensuring optimal learning and practice opportunities for each attendee, along with dedicated attention from the instructor.

We offer the option to run this course as private training, tailored to your schedule, your own boat (if applicable), and your specific learning needs. It can be organised for individuals, couples, families, or small groups who prefer a more personalised experience
Will I receive a certificate at the end of the course?
Yes, absolutely!
Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded the RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Completion.
This certificate confirms that the holder has received advanced-level training in powerboat handling, navigation, passage planning, and safety. It demonstrates participation in an advanced training programme but cannot be commercially endorsed.
Participants wishing to obtain a commercial endorsement for professional use must also pass the MCA/RYA Advanced Powerboat practical examination, which is conducted by an independent RYA examiner. For further details about the exam, please feel free to contact us.
