Our RYA Shorebased Courses provide the essential knowledge sailors need to complement practical skills. Covering navigation, pilotage, passage planning, tides, weather, and safety, these courses build a strong foundation for all practical training as well as specialist qualifications such as RYA SRC (Short Range Certificate) and PPR (Professional Practices and Responsibilities).
Flexible learning options are available, including classroom sessions in our offices and online study, all delivered by experienced RYA-certified instructors
The RYA Day Skipper shorebased course gives aspiring skippers the theoretical knowledge needed to navigate and command a small yacht safely in familiar coastal waters by day.
You’ll learn chartwork and pilotage, position fixing, passage planning, tides, meteorology, collision regulations, electronic navigation and core seamanship concepts — all geared to making sound decisions on board and preparing you for practical RYA Day Skipper Sail or RYA Day Skipper Motor.
The RYA Coastal Skipper shorebased course provides advanced navigation and meteorology training for experienced skippers who want to undertake longer and more complex passages, including night sailing.
Building on Day Skipper theory, you’ll develop the skills to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages, refine your pilotage techniques, and gain confidence in decision-making for extended voyages. This course prepares you for the RYA Coastal Skipper Sail or RYA Coastal Skipper Motor Course.
This course is designed for anyone who owns, operates, or intends to use a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. Clear and reliable communication at sea is vital for safety and navigation, and understanding how to properly use VHF equipment is a legal requirement in most countries.
The RYA PPR Course is a mandatory online course for anyone applying for or revalidating an RYA Commercial Endorsement—this includes qualifications such as Day Skipper, Yachtmaster, Powerboat Level 2, and others.
It equips participants with a clear understanding of the professional, legal, and ethical responsibilities needed when operating commercially—ensuring competence and accountability in the maritime profession.
