What kind of boats are covered?
The scheme focuses on boats that are:
- Typically over 10 metres and up to 24 metres in length
- Displacement or semi-displacement hulls and inboard engine(s)
- Equipped with cabins and on-board facilities for extended stays
- Designed for comfortable, long-distance cruising
Examples include:
- Flybridge motor cruisers
- Sports cruisers with cabins
- Trawler yachts
- Large displacement motorboats
- Ideal for those new to motor cruising – no experience on motor cruisers required, experience
- 4 days of practical training onboard a motor cruisers
- Learn basic boat handling, engine checks, safety procedures, and mooring
- Covers everyday tasks for day cruising in familiar waters
- Builds confidence to act as crew or take the helm under supervision
- Ideal for those with some experience on motor cruisers – RYA Helmsman or equivalent practical experience recommended
- Covers navigation, pilotage, boat handling, and safety at sea
- Plan and execute short coastal passages by day
- Gain the skills to skipper a motor cruiser in familiar waters
- Ideal for experienced skippers looking to develop offshore skills
- Focus on advanced navigation, passage planning, and boat handling in challenging conditions
- Includes night cruising and handling in unfamiliar harbours
- Prepares for extended coastal and offshore cruising
